How-To Add a Printer

Notes: Each printer 'should' have a sticker on the front that identifies it. For example 'WIHD02' would be the second floor Copy Machine near the elevators. If you find that a printer near you does not have a 'name tag' identifying it, please let us know at the helpdesk.

There is a very small number of printers that will require our direct attention in order to install drivers onto your workstation. WIHD02 is actually a good example of this and you will find that you're not able to install it yourself. Just let us know if you encounter a situation like this and we'll be glad to help. helpdesk@wihd.org

To begin, you need the 'Printers and Faxes' window open on your screen as shown below.

To open this window you can click on the button and select Settings / Printers & Faxes.

Trouble?: Depending on your configuration, you may find 'Printers & Faxes' directly after clicking 'Start' and not under 'Start/Settings/...'

Once you have the window open, click on 'Add Printer' (circled in red above)

Now you will be presented with the Add Printer Wizard. Click 'Next'.

Select to add a 'Network Printer' as shown above and then click 'Next'.

Now indicate that the Printer should be found in the Directory and then click 'Next'.

An additional window appears, click the 'Find Now' button.

The window will expand to show you the results of a printer search. Locate the printer you desire, click on it and then click the 'OK' button or you may simply Double-Click on the printer in the list.

You will be presented with an option to specify this printer as the default. Usually you will want to answer 'No' unless you want to print to this device very frequently.

Make a choice and click 'Next'.

Finally, a successfully installed printer results in the completion information shown above. Click 'Finish' and the printer is now attached.

Other Facts: Printers exist on a per-person basis not per workstation. This means that different users on the same computer will each have independent configurations. On a single workstation, person 'A' will not have the same printers as person 'B'.

So if you are suddenly missing a printer, make sure you're actually logged in under the username you think you are.
